Steps in choosing a Solar Photo-voltaic (PV) system:
- Determine how many Kwh you will need to produce
- Determine if your location is a good candidate for a solar installation
- Will this size system fit at your location?
- Will you tie your system into the power grid (intertie)?
- Or, will you prefer to tie it to a battery backup so that you will have power even in a blackout
- Or, both intertie and battery. Note: during a blackout you lose power.
- Price system/determine installer
- Purchase and install
How many Kwh?
- Determine how many Kwh on average you use per day by looking at your utility bills or call your utility and ask
- Avg Kwh per day / avg hours sunlight per day = Kwh for system
- Example: 15Kwh used per day / 5Kwh per day of sunlight(CA) = 3Kwh
Suitable Location
- Location should have unobstructed view of the sun throughout the day
- For roof installations, southern exposure to the sun gives best results
Will size fit your location?

Price system and determine who will install
- Locate a local solar installer and have them price system
- Purchase solar components by self and find electrician to install (Better prices)
