Wind

Wind Energy is the use of the natural wind to provide energy in a variety of resourceful and environmentally friendly ways to replace other polluting energy sources.

Wind uses:

  • Electricity generation
  • Windmills
  • Transportation

Electricity Generation

Blowing wind spins the blades on a wind turbine (large windmill). The spinning blades turn a generator that makes electricity. This electricity can then be used locally or connected to the power grid for use by the general population.

Windmills

Farmers have been using wind energy for centuries to pump water from wells using windmills like the one on the left.

Windmills are also used to grind corn, wheat, and other grains.

Transportation

Although sailboats, gliders, and hang-gliders sound more like entertainment than transportation, these ways of travel are under-utilized as modes of transportation. Sailboats allow inexpensive travel for long distances over water. Gliders or hang-gliders can be a viable alternative for commuters wanting to avoid traffic gridlock, but still be environmentally friendly.
